A Mid-Century Legend, Modernized.
This 1959 Airstream was snoring loudly among weeds in Salinas before Andreas transformed it into a small garden living space. Without a single right angle in the 120 square foot monocoque interior, this project was more akin to boatbuilding than a room renovation.
Although the design was irreverent of the original 1950 layout and finishes, Andreas worked to recreate the magic that has always been associated with the American icon of travel and freedom. The Airstream now lives in the back yard of the world headquarters of BASE Landscape Architecture, where she has hosted and welcomed scores of visiting friends who are moving or visiting the Bay Area.
