Cypress Corner Mini Plaza and Parklet
Walnut Creek, CA
Project Description
Cypress Corner Mini Plaza and Parklet has transformed a typical stretch of public sidewalk into a vibrant public gathering place in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek, CA. The design revitalizes the 2,750 sf plaza through its use of social seating areas, outdoor dining space for adjacent businesses, play mounds to entertain and engage children and visitors of all ages, and eye-catching plantings all woven together to beautify and activate a previously underutilized urban sidewalk. Not only has Cypress Corner spurred local economic activity by increasing foot traffic and drawing vistorship, it also serves to calm vehicular traffic and improve pedestrian safety along an active commercial corridor.
The beautification endeavor has cultivated a renewed sense of local pride and investment, and encourages community building by providing a place for visitors to safely gather and engage. In this especially challenging time navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, the plaza and parklet provide a much needed outdoor meeting place, allowing visitors to safely socialize, play, take a moment of rest, or enjoy opportunities for outdoor dining.
