Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History Garden
Pacific Grove, CA

Project Description
BASE is working with Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History in the renovation of the Native Plant Garden. The Native Plant Garden, created in 1903 in the Museum’s backyard, has been a treasured haven and educational resource ever since. Today, the Garden is a thriving native plant garden in need of an update. BASE is supporting the Museum with community engagements to gather input from staff and local Indigenous communities, and craft a garden experience that honors the native inhabitants of Pacific Grove.

The intention of the renovation is to create diverse modes of engagement to learn about the local cultural and ecological landscape. The highest priorities of the Museum are to inspire action in visitors, teach local ecology, engage and excite ages, and offer culturally and ability inclusive design. The programs include nature play elements as gravel dig and plant tunnels, an expanded amphitheater spaces, spaces for small gatherings as picnic tables and small huts, and exhibition gardens for rainwater, pollinators and ethnobotany.

BASE has gathered site data, facilitated a series of community engagement, and identified programs that reflect the needs and desires of the Museum community. We are helping to design a master plan with two phases for the garden. We are excited to complete this master plan phase and move on to the next phase of design development and construction documentation to make this project a reality.
