Set in the Oakland Hills, Casa Blanca is a residential project in collaboration with AAA Architects. BASE worked to fulfill the clients desire for a series of smaller intimate gathering spaces that would connect with the interior spaces and the sweeping Bay views. This effect is largely achieved through different ground plane materials and planting areas. Materials on the ground plane include decomposed granite, crushed basalt, and a variety of concrete treatments such as textured, tinted hard trowelled, tinted heavy sandblast, and “sparkle concrete”. Plants were selected for their bizarre sculptural form, low water requirements, and high pollinator benefit. Untreated steel gabion walls and metal accents throughout were designed to achieve a rusted, weathered effect over time.
