Greener Schoolyards in San Francisco Schools!
Since voters passed a bond measure for green schoolyards, the SFUSD has been working with a handful of landscape architecture firms and schools each year to realize small landscape improvements. This year, BASE was chosen to design a new space for Aptos Middle School. BASE worked closely with the Aptos Schoolyard Greening Committee and SFUSD project managers thorugh a series of presentations where we recieved valuable input and feedback, and were able to refne the design to meet the needs of the students, teachers, and staff.
BASE transformed a bleak asphalt courtyard into a colorful and inviting space students can utilize during lunch and recess. The new plan accommodates seating for over 100 students with raised planters and log seating features. The existing volleyball court remains while existing picnic tables were relocated. The school will host a community workday to add native, drought tolerant planting and trees for some much needed shade.
